- [Welsh Branch Championships of the NVS 1999](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/welsh-branch-championships-of-the-nvs-1999/): There is no doubt that over the past few years this show has become one of the main events in the keen vegetable exhibitors' diary. There are 21 competitive classes forming the Welsh Championships, with the addition of a further three classes for the novice grower. In addition the Welsh branch are also custodians of four major National Championships, ie the Welsh Open Onion Championship for a dish of five onions over 250grms, the National Leek Championship of Great Britain for a dish of three blanch leeks, the National Potato Championship of Great Britain for five dishes of four potatoes( five different varieties, at least two dishes must be coloured) and, finally, the National Tap Root Championship of Great Britain consisting of two parsnips, two beetroot long, two carrots long and two carrots other than long with a definite stump end.

Today however we have some newer varieties that seem to be superior in shape and keeping qualities. Toughball is one recent introduction that has a globe shape coupled with a lovely brown colour. Another, even newer introduction, is Bison which is much more uniform in shape than Toughball, fully globular with light brown skin colour and deep prominent veining that makes it stand out on the show bench.

The cauliflowers in the onion bed are now all finished and the next task is to completely clear it out. The plants are all removed together with the black and white polythene, the seeping hoses washed and rolled up to be kept until next year and the heating cables in the soil also carefully removed to be utilised again during February next year.

This is undoubtedly the greatest vegetable show anywhere in the country and any of you who want to have a go can get the show schedule free.

They are reasonably priced and afford us the protection of growing top quality vegetables, not only earlier but to a higher standard as well. They can however be like ovens from now on if we have a decent Summer and many of the ones over twenty feet in length must have some form of air flow to combat the incessant heat that can build up inside them.

My large exhibition onions were lifted last week at 22 inches in circumference and currently I am very pleased with them and I should be able to at least have a decent set of three for the collection of vegetables.

The first name actually given to the tomato was �Peruvian Apple' or �Apple of Peru' around the sixteenth century and would seem to indicate that this most popular of vegetables was of Peruvian origin.

My F1 hybrid Celery, Evening Star was sown about two weeks later than last year, even though they were tremendous plants then I was unable to show any of them as they had simply gone over top. The vigour within these new hybrids is quite amazing and I honestly feel that once we learn how to cope with them we are yet to see the best of these.

The vibes that I am getting at the moment is that the top potato growers, who grow in polythene bags, no longer remove the haulms from the plants. They lift the bags from the trenches, together with the haulms and taking them under cover so that they can dry out with no risk of any rain getting at them.

- [Polytunnels, Preservatives and Mixtures](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/polytunnels-preservatives-and-mixtures/): The doors and frames to my polytunnels are not going to last very long unless treated. It really isn't a difficult job as most of the wood preservers are like water and you can easily cover a large area in minutes. Do make sure that whatever preservative you use that it's harmless to any plants, the last thing you want is your plants to collapse from the paint fumes.

Just to see the large Lindley Hall in Vincent Square full of quality fruit and vegetables was a truly amazing site. The RHS Garden from Wisley, under the supervision of their fruit Superintendent Jim Arbury, did a phenomenal job of organising the arranging of 200 baskets of fruit to celebrate the RHS Bicentenary year.

Having mixed about 5 mixer fulls the whole lot was brought back home, the bore holes filled with the compost and the seed sown. That evening I went and emptied the boot of the car of all the bags and realised to my horror that the bag I thought was Q4 was in fact Q4 HN (HN meaning high Nitrogen). A bag I thought I had long finished with.
- [Blight Resistant Potatoes](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/blight-resistant-potatoes/): The biggest killer that Ireland has ever seen all started off with our staple diet, the humble potato. It began with a blight of the potato crop that left acre upon acre of Irish farmland covered with a messy black rot. As harvests across Europe failed, the price of food soared. The poor Irish farmers found their food stores rotting in their cellars, the crops they relied on to pay the rent to their landlords totally destroyed.

ESP (Exhibition Seed Potatoes) are a new-comer themselves to the potato scene, a company that started selling seed potatoes last year and their insert for 2005 has a few extra varieties to ponder over.

It's also time to get your order for exhibition shallots in, don"t forget the old saying, plant them on the shortest day and harvest on the longest.
- [Nutrimate and  Jet 5](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/nutrimate-and-jet-5/): I was very impressed with the performance of Nutrimate last year, I added it to all my final potting mixtures as well as to the beds. The plants at planting out time were unbelievably powerful with the foliage standing bolt upright in their pots. Another product that I used with marvellous results was the horticultural disinfectant, Jet 5. The beds had nothing done to them until two weeks prior to planting. At that time they were roughly forked over and a whole 45 gallon drum full of mixed Jet 5 was soaked into each bed. The onions I had out of the two beds were superb and had I not been too greedy in trying to push for a set over 22 inches around I could have staged some good ones.
- [Preparing for tenth consecutive Chelsea Gold medal](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/preparing-for-tenth-consecutive-chelsea-gold-medal/): I have just started growing in earnest in my greenhouses at Bangor in an attempt to gain my tenth consecutive Chelsea Gold medal. I do have a few new ideas in mind for the 2005 show and as always they will centre on having as much colour as possible within the display as well as introducing some more difficult specimens to grow.
- [Kelsae and Toughball Onions](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/kelsae-and-toughball-onions/): During the course of today I shall I be sowing my own re selected seed of the large Kelsae onion. Onion seed are large enough to be spaced out individually on top of the compost leaving approximately an inch between each one. Using the same flat board that flattened the compost, gently press the seed down into it and cover the seed up to the rim with fine vermiculite. Scrape off the excess using the straight edge and with a fine rose on a hand sprayer, gently water the vermiculite so that it beds itself well around all the seed. Although the onion variety Toughball is no longer available in my 2005 catalogue, since going to print, I have been able to source out some top quality seed from abroad.

In the end though I inevitably get involved in carrying out some chore or other as I pop into the garden and greenhouses to make sure everything is on song.

Incidentally this will be my tenth and last Chelsea Show and I just hope that the raw material is there so that I a can create a display worthy of another RHS Gold medal which will be my tenth consecutively.
- [Millennium Class](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/millennium-class/): The class consists of the following - A collection of Five Kinds of Vegetables �Four of each kind. Potatoes: white or coloured; Carrots: stump rooted; Beetroot: Globe; Tomatoes; Onions, each onion must not exceed 250 grams. Displayed in an area 30cm frontage (12�). Plates provided, no other staging materials allowed.
- [Traditional Trench Celery versus Self Blanching Celery](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/traditional-trench-celery-versus-self-blanching-celery/): The difference basically between the two is that the trench variety needs to be earthed up in stages to blanch the stems where as the self blanching type needs to be planted in blocks or squares to blanch itself. The trench type certainly requires more commitment to thorough ground preparation but has, in my opinion, a far superior flavour.

- [Weather](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/weather/): I have never seen as much rain as we had on Boxing Day, the heavens opened up for most of the day with Anglesey damn near cut off from the mainland. Both main arteries to North Wales were impassable with the A55 and A5 completely flooded over. We had rain throughout November, every day, and through to December so it’s impossible to push any more water into a fully saturated sponge, that’s a reflection on the condition of the land around here. When I went down to the greenhouse on the land on Boxing Day I couldn’t believe the amount of water that was all over the place, it was over my boots in most places. However when I got into the greenhouse there was about four inches of water covering the whole floor and getting close to our power supply. Alwyn and Alina went there later to open a ditch alongside as well as placing some sandbags along the front opening. The unreal thing was watching Alina watering the leeks and onions with gallons of water floating below her!

I am now on Twitter at least once a week and you can follow me on Medwyn Williams (@medwynsofanglesey). I thought that when I retired I would have more time to do other things, no such luck I’m afraid! I had six young plants from Bill Jones of Wrexham during early January and they are now growing away really well in 50 litre pots. There’s no doubt that watering is critical with onions, they certainly don’t like having their feet wet all the time, neither do they like having water soaking around the root plate. One of the first speakers on Saturday morning was supposed to be Marcus Powell who sadly had to pull out, however he was replaced by two very able exhibitors in John Branham and Jim Thompson who gave an excellent practical talk on the judging of vegetables.

- [Llanedwen Blanch Leek ‘New’](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/llanedwen-blanch-leek-new/): Two people have had a great influence on the selection and crossing of blanch leeks over the past decade or so. Ivor Mace was the first to introduce a new cross on the show scene with the 'Welsh Seedling' which won at the highest level for many years, indeed Ivor won with it last year at both the Welsh Championships and the UK Championships. David Metcalfe followed that with the Pendle leek named after the Pendle hills close to his home.  This was the leek that Micky Ruddy from Benwell Newcastle broke the World record with for a pair at 382 Cubic inches. This was certainly a heavy leek but lacked some refinement and wasn’t that easy to pull.
- [Vegetable Masterclass Weekend](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/vegetable-masterclass-weekend-2/): This will be my 19th consecutive Masterclass Weekend for gardening enthusiasts and I have tried to make it as interesting as possible whilst at the same time taxing our brains a little. - [Parsley for Display](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/parsley-for-display/): One element of my displays that the public rarely take much notice of but is a very important part of the whole display is parsley. They may be sub consciously aware of something green in the background of the dishes but it really is vitally important to create an effect that makes the cultivars within the dishes stand out. The parsley is used to complement the dish of carrots or potatoes or whatever else its used to garnish, however it must never take over the dish to the detriment of the vegetable that it’s supposed to enhance.

- [LONG RED CHILI](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/product/long-red-chili/): I have been re-selecting this for a few years now, and it really does grow to a very long length with a huge selection to pick from. It grows easily to 15 inches plus, and with some thinning out, it could easily exceed that.  A variety for the longest chili or any other veg class. Oh, I nearly forgot, you can eat it as well!! - [UKRANIAN RED TOMATO](https://medwynsofanglesey.co.uk/product/ukranian-red-tomato/): This is a reintroduction of a variety that was given to me by an old lady who had travelled to Ukraine many years ago and gave me some seed.
