GOOD DAY TODAY

Got up early this morning with the threat of very poor weather, but when I arrived on the field just after 8 things improved immensely, with sunshine blazing down all day. It even got better after lunch time when I pulled my long carrots and parsnips for the RHS Tatton Park Show. The Long carrots were the best I have grown for a number of years with really good colour, good length and very smooth skin.

However the best was yet to come! Alwyn and myself went to pull the brand new parsnip we are trialling and this is sure to be the one that most growers will go for next year. It’s an early variety with fantastic white colour and carries its weight down evenly along its length. They are over 5 feet in length and 10 inches around the shoulder. Best of all though I only pulled seven to get six and there was nothing wrong at all with the seventh, just a little shorter! I f you are at the Tatton Park Show you can see them on the stand. I had twenty bore holes and the remaining 13 will be left for the Welsh and possibly even the National, only time will tell!

Any tips for avaoiding splitting on long beet, it was your seed and grew really well in 6 inch diameter tubes but I think I must have got the watering regime wrong!
