Sturon – a popular culinary variety noted for a well shaped, round bulb with an excellent flavour. Medium sized, with thin necks they will store well right through the winter to March under the right conditions. Sturon are an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner – so you know they will grow well for you. Our hand-picked sets are heat treated to stop them bolting, which is often a problem when growing onions from sets. For best results apply a dressing of my Leek & Onion fertiliser Item 0065 which I have formulated to the correct nutrient balance of NPK plus additional magnesium at 4oz per square yard prior to planting. Rake into the soil and then plant at a spacing of 6″ in rows 12″ apart.
With light soils just push the sets into the soil so the tip is left showing, firm the soil around the set to stop it lift from the ground. On heavy soils, scrape a small hole because pushing the set too hard can damage the root plate.
Keep weed free and watered in dry weather.
